Commutator in electronics is generally referred to a moving
part used in electric motors or generators and the basic function of the
commutator is to overturn the direction of current between rotor and attached
circuit. When used in motors, it applies the on the rotor and when used in
generator it picks up the power from the motor similarly. It is just like a
switch between the circuit and rotor.
A commutator is commonly consisting of
copper bars assembled which give a cylinder like structure with copper winding
around it. The commutator also got brushes which carry and transfer current
from rotor to circuit.
Different type of electric motor commutator manufactures has various
methods of manufacturing. The manufacturing process also depends upon the
operation of the commutator like would it be used in general electric motor or
would it be used in the industry. The method of manufacturing is the same only
quality differs from one manufacturer to other.
